Canada must change course

An op-ed by the IET in The Hill Times

In this Monday's The Hill Times, researchers from the IET and the Transition Accelerator argue in a — harsh but hopeful — op-ed that Canada is not on track to meet its 2030 or 2035 emissions targets. But this shortfall isn’t just about weak ambition — it’s about a deeper structural disconnect between our energy systems, economy, and policy tools.

By changing course, though, and shifting from short-term targets to long-term transformation, the 2050 netzero target is still within reach. In a new report, Normand Mousseau (IET), Simon Langlois-Bertrand (IET) and James Meadowcroft (TA) detail their vision on how to get it done. And that starts with scaling what works: clean power, electrified transport, efficient buildings, and decarbonized industry — all linked through a coherent industrial strategy.

"If 2025 becomes the year governments reconnect climate, energy, and economic policy, Canada can still meet its 2050 goal — and emerge more prosperous and competitive in the process."
